Lawrence E. “Gene” Benson Sr., 81 of Huntington, passed away Friday July 2, 2010 at his home. Lawrence graduated from Huntington Township High School in 1946 and from Tri State College in Angola in 1950, where he earned his degree in aeronautical engineering, and was a member of TKE- Beta Epsilon Chapter. He then served in the US Army, and was stationed in Germany. He worked at Crosley Company in Richmond, Tokeim and Protective Coatings both in Fort Wayne, M & S Sheet Metal in Huntington, and retired from Kunkle Industries in Fort Wayne in 1993. He enjoyed building model airplanes.
Lawrence was born October 13, 1928 in Huntington, the son of Ralph and Erma (Baxter) Benson. While stationed in Germany he met and he married his beloved wife Johanna Kolly on December 13, 1952, in Altbach, Germany, and she passed away July 17, 2008. He is survived by a son Lawrence “Larry” E. Benson Jr. of Peru, 2 daughters Susan (Craig) Johnson of Vincennes and Trisha Wilson of Fort Wayne, 3 grandchildren Jamie (Robert) Baldwin, Brandon Wilson and Jessica Wilson, 2 great-granddaughters Rebeca & Sara Baldwin, and 2 brothers Daryl M. (Geraldine) Benson of Fort Wayne and Verlin “Jerry” (JoAnn) Benson of Huntington. He was preceded in death by a brother Richard Benson.
Visitation will be held Tuesday July 6, 2010 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Deal-Rice Funeral Home- Huntington Chapel. Funeral services will be held Wednesday July 7, at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.
