John Julian Klingenberger, age 69, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday. March 2, 2021, at 3:30 am at North Woods Village in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was born June 12, 1951, the son of Jack and Ethel (Schnelker) Klingenberger.
He graduated from Bishop Luers High School and IU University. He spent his career in the field of writing in some form or another. For many years he was employed at Huntington Herald Press and the Roanoke Courier as a reporter and photographer, winning many awards for his articles and pictures. Even more important were all of the family photos he took over the years of birthdays, graduations, weddings and holidays. He spent the second half of his working life at Heartland REMC as Marketing Director. While at REMC he took his first airplane flight to California with his boss and would still talk about it years later. Flying was an adventure for this country boy.
His biggest love though next to his children, was nature and the outdoors. There was very little he didn’t experience as he hunted, fished, trapped, camped, hiked, and snowmobiled. It was a yearly ritual for him and his best friend Hugh Farmer to pack up the family and go snowmobiling in Upper Michigan every winter. He and Hugh are both back together now, popping tops and catching up. He was also very active in his home town of Roanoke with various organizations and as is common in small towns knew everyone by name.
John is survived by his daughter Molly (Erich) Rommel, sons Jake Klingenberger and Luke Klingenberger, three beautiful granddaughters; Emma, Kate and Avery, special friend, Cathy Copper, and sisters Sue (Bruce) Keller and Jeanne Hohenstein. He was proceeded in death by two brother-in-laws Joe King and Mike Hohenstein.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 4 from 2-5 & 6-8 pm at Roanoke Memorial Chapel of Deal-Rice Funeral Homes and Friday March 5 from 9-10 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Roanoke, preceding the 10:00 am Funeral Mass. Father Dale Bauman will officiate.
Preferred memorials are to Honor Flight of NE Indiana or Disabled Veterans Outdoor Wilderness Experience Division (DVOWED) c/o Roanoke Memorial Chapel, 240 Crestwood Dr., Roanoke, IN 46783.
