Paula I. Avila, age 44, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 10:19 pm at home surrounded by her loving family. She graduated from Huntington North High School in 1995 and the University of St. Francis in 1999 with a duel degree in biology and chemistry. She worked as a lab assistant at University of St. Francis, then as a lab tech at Ft. Wayne Medical Laboratory, and for the last 6 years in Research at Manchester University. She was a practicing Catholic, belonged to the Hispanic Leadership Coalition of Northeast Indiana (former president), Faith in Indiana, American Chemical Society, and a recipient of the Franciscan Spirit award. She enjoyed science, learning, crocheting, art, track & field, running, and playing soccer. She found her greatest joy helping others.
Paula was born December 22, 1976, in Maravillas, Aguascalientes, Mexico, a daughter of Pablo Avila and Maria Elena (Deluna) Fahl. Her father survives in Mexico and her mother in Roanoke. Also surviving are three sisters Laura Avila of Fort Wayne, Alma DeWeese of Warren, Gloria (Richard) May of Fort Wayne, a brother Miguel Avila of California, nieces and nephews Uriah DeWeese, Sierra Holloway, Jadyn Holloway, Aiden DeWeese, Marciano Avila, Leo May, and Barrett May. She was preceded in death by brother-in-law Danny DeWeese.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 21 from 3-4 & 6-8 pm at Roanoke Memorial Chapel of Deal-Rice Funeral Homes and Wednesday, December 22 from 9-10 am preceding the 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Roanoke. Father Dale Bauman will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Roanoke.
